TO LOSE A CHILD

But the Dove found no rest
for the sole of her foot,  and
she returned unto him into the arc...
                                                     Genesis 8: 9

As many times as I have attended families
torn by unexpected senseless tragedy and sorrow I never thought it would happen to my family.  We all have a built in denial.  A sense of somehow being protected.  I had just left my home with a friend on my way to dinner.  It was a quiet sun drenched afternoon on the 22 day April of 1985, with the lilacs in full scented glory.
I was one week past receiving my chip for two years of sobriety from AA and my life was starting to turn around.

From the sidewalk I heard the telephone give that slightly louder and clearer ring that in retrospect was somewhat ominous.  Uncharacteristically, I doubled back and answered it just as the answering machine recorder kicked in saving the moment for history.  My son’s strained voice telling me the unthinkable.  I should meet him at Porter Hospital.  That my daughter had hurt herself.  I did not know then that he had just cut his sister down.  When I asked how badly, the answer was “Dad, I think she’s dead.”

At that nanosecond in time several things happened.  A part of me was ripped away. My entire family was irrevocably shattered and my life was forever changed.  My world tilted left, then right, became opaque and stayed that way.

From there it was a surreal slideshow of slow motion stills.

The silent ride to the hospital where I instinctively entered through the ambulance entrance while Julie parked.  There was an ambulance parked inside the covered ramp with the rear door open.  There was an ambulance cot sitting alone and unattended on the driveway.  I saw my daughter’s uncovered face and I knew then what I already had known.  My beautiful violet eyed daughter had taken her own life at 54 days into her 14th year.
I do not understand this.  I do not know why.  Only that it was a selfish act.

I entered the ER and was waylaid by the Chaplain where we were placed in a small barren windowless room in the hospital where it was suggested “we would be more comfortable”.  I suggested that perhaps it was he who would be more comfortable with us out of sight.  I interpreted the move as “We cannot, nor do not, want to try to deal with you”.  Medical personal are helpless in the face of death.  I believe they take it as a personal failure.  That is one of the reasons we have undertakers.

I left the room and walked outside.  I cut a sprig from a Colorado blue spruce and when I returned I placed it in my daughter’s hand.  Somehow it was a totem of eternal life.

The reason for the wait was for Keri’s mother to arrive, apparently so they could confirm her death to everyone at once instead of having to go trough it twice.  Her mother finally arrived and the ritual was consummated.  I cannot remember much of that except that I was unable to go to her mother’s side and comfort her.  I wanted to but I just couldn’t.

We left the hospital.  What had just happened was enough to make anyone drink, alcoholic or not.  I knew that my sponsor would be attending a certain AA meeting that evening.  I got there just as it was starting.  The usual format of a meeting was suspended.  I talked.  In retrospect that must have been one of the most unusual meetings in the history of AA.  I still occasionally meet people who were there and remark of it.

The calling at the Funeral Home in Littleton was marked by me being largely ignored and my wonderment that such a brainless, insensitive clod could have apparently been “assigned” to be the undertaker.

I was pretty much left out of the loop during the entire ordeal.  My sister and cousin flew out from Chicago.  I had about five personal friends and my sponsor in AA  at my side, all of them Jews.  Throughout my life it has been the Jews who have been there when I needed help.

The funeral was held at night in a large church in Littleton, CO.  It was filled to capacity with four to five hundred people in attendance.  The services proceeded during a violent electrical storm, with lightening and thunder, pelting rain and hail.  There were literally streams of water running down the outside of the huge stained glass windows.  I remember turning around and seeing my friend, Ira a towering, black bearded Orthodox Jew, standing in the back possibly as bewildered at being there as I was at seeing him there.  But he was there.  That is a friend.  I made it all right until someone started playing Amazing Grace on a piano.  I kept it together but it was a lot rougher.

I had asked one thing of the preacher, that he recite the Serenity Prayer.  This well fed, pompous, self serving excuse for a man did not honor Keri’s father’s only request.  He had his own agenda.  He had an audience and he was going to make the most of it, including a visible personal insult.  When I confronted him at the cemetery he wussed out, saying that while Keri and her sister and her mother had attended his church, I had not.  How Christian.  It was only because of a sense of resignation, that I did not slug him.

Keri rests now in the Littleton Cemetery at the top of a gentle sloping hill overlooking the Burlington Northern Railroad Tracks and the white topped peaks of the Rocky Mountains.

Next to Keri is buried her best friend Patricia, killed by a drunken driver at the age of 21.  The irony does not escape me.

THE SHERIFF OF NOTTINGHAM

LOVE IS BLIND AND SO IS JUSTICE

Had I even contemplated doing any of the crimes that the ex sheriff of Arapahoe County, Colorado was charged with and / or convicted of, I would be hung up by my Balls.  It is that simple.  That a sociopath could obtain such power and position, I could understand.  But to let him walk with a slap on the wrist is incomprehensible.  This is a travesty and a miscarriage of justice of the first magnitude.  I have been served with injustice in my life and I hate like Hell to see this sort of thing happen.  But this is also the real world.  It is not only who you know, it is apparently who you blow.

AS A LAMB IS LED TO THE SLAUGHTER

Forty eight years ago tonight, at this hour, this is where I was, in a photograph frozen in time, with Jesus looking the other way.

It seemed like a good idea at the moment.

It was something that had the potential to be the best marriage ever.  It didn’t pan out.  It was doomed from the start.  Two immature, egocentric, young people who had no business getting married and who today, probably wouldn’t.   I am aware of my many faults.  I am aware of her faults.  To enumerate them now would be pointless.  After twenty years and three wonderful and wounded children the words came down in a courthouse in Colorado: Irrevocable Differences.  And with that I picked up my life and went on to meet triumph and tragedy.

I have a lot of regrets in my life and the fact that this marriage failed is probably the greatest.

Like the shadowy picture in the very top center of the photograph, I am----

FALL BACK AND REGROUP

OK, Sports Fans.  I have learned something in the last few months.  Writing a blog is somewhat like owning a cow.  You have to keep feeding it and you have to stop and clean out the stable.

I have been on a roll with political & social issues.  I still have more to go.  I said in the beginning that this blog would morph and it has.  I have received pressure to write blood and sand as promised, both from the outside and self imposed.  I respect all those opinions.  I am considering that my grandchildren may read this and that my reputation with my family has suffered enough already.  Some of the people I might write about are still living and married or both.  Some, but not all.  So discretion is the better part of valor.  There are also some things that are so horrible that I cannot write of them, and that alcohol wouldn’t eradicate.  That’s where Brenda comes in.

I plan to continue to write.  Yes, on politics but I plan to mix with stories of my personal experiences and observations.  Right now guys, cut me some slack.  I need to do some things for myself.  I need to spend quality time with my cat.  I want to study the people of the country of Myanmar.  I need to clean up the files on my computer before it does a China Syndrome.  I want to paint my room Dorian Grey.

And Now-----
Just to set the record straight, I download stuff, pictures primarily, from the internet.  Anything I download and used in my work I am going to assume is free domain.  If anyone has a problem with what I use; if I am infringing on anyone, please contact me and we will work it out.  By the same token feel free to use anything I post.  Credits are nice.  I am not hard to get along with in spite of some opinions to the contrary.  Wives, ex wives, etc.

IF YOU AREN'T PARANOID THEN YOU AREN'T PAYING ATENTION.

Massive amounts of Federal money, our money, is being poured in to arm and equip local police and paramilitary forces.  I have stood and seen them used against us.  We are under surveillance by hundreds of sophisticated HALO cameras funded by, again, Federal Funds.
 Federal money=Federal Police.

We are----rapidly--- headed to having a National Police Force.  By allusion, illusion, collusion and deception.  If you think the local cops are bad, ----you ain’t seen nothin’ yet.  Check out the National Defense Security Act of 2012.  I believe some ‘law and order’ folks think this would be a good thing.  But they haven’t been arrested-----yet.  There seems to be an expanding insinuation of men and women in military garb on our streets ‘assisting’ or ‘advising’ local law enforcement..  Remember when we had advisers in Vietnam.  After a while we accept them as being friendly, helpful,  young people.  Is this what we want?

Even as I write the government is magnanimously reducing our Army.  An Army exhausted, battered, worn and dehumanized by years of steady redeployment in wars that make no sense.  Come to think about of it, no war ever did.  “Hey, thanks guys, but we don’t need you anymore.”  People with all kinds of combat related mental disorders will be released with little support system into a civilian population already burdened with no job market and an economy several years into a depression.   Many of them will join the growing number of unwelcome homeless Travis Bickles’ who are being shuttled from street to park to street.  And, I suspect, a number will be absorbed into our police forces and prison systems paid for with federal funds.  Someone has to keep dissent down.  I am already seeing the police wear more khaki than blue, and with riot gear, they look like storm troopers.   You do not want to see these guys running through your backyard toward your back door.

Barney Fife is certainly gone but with him went Gary Cooper in High Noon.

THE POLICE ARE THE PRODUCT OF THEIR ENVIRONMENT.

They follow orders.  They serve their masters.  (Some of them seem to serve with a malicious, sadistic glee.)  They let testosterone participate in overkill.   The police are afraid of the people they are hired to protect.  Interestingly the Power Elite are afraid of everyone else.  That’s a hell of a note.  Therefore they respond with overwhelming force.  Not coincidentally, this is the same mindset as the military.  This explains the massive police presence in an attempt to quell a lawful peaceful protest.  Lately the Occupy movement encampment across from the capitol.  About 200 well equipped cops and photographers and reporters against maybe 40 cold and hungry kids.  Protesters that apparently struck a cold and unnamed fear into the hearts of the Downtown Businessmen.

If Mountain City would spend the money they pay out in lawsuits involving police misconduct, for better training and higher salaries, we would all be better off.  Many cops have a control thing.  The perfectly pressed blues, shiny brass buttons and cartridges, and gleaming leather lend an atmosphere of authority.   It is the Top Sgt. in the Army calling me “Sir” with just the amount of pause before the “Sir” to show utter contempt.  Some find it easier to make the law rather than uphold it.  It becomes easy to beat some punk senseless in a dark corner.  Your partner will not rat you out because you may be the one to cover him when he gets into a tight spot,
It is my perception that Mountain City and other municipalities are picking people who have a tendency to take a sadistic pleasure in their jobs and putting them in SWAT and other like teams.

One should avoid the police at all costs.  But when you are in trouble who are you going to call?

THE POLICE ARE THE POLICE, WHETHER HERE OR IN GERMANY

------------She had never had to deal with a policeman in her life, and it had never entered her mind to be menaced by one.  Policemen were neither friends nor enemies; they were part of the landscape, present for the purpose of upholding law and order; and if a policeman----for she had never thought of them as being very bright----seemed to forget his place, it was easy enough to make him remember it.  Easy enough if one’s own place was more secure than his, and if one represented, or could bring to bear, a power greater than his own.  For all policemen were bright enough to know who they were working for, and they were not working, anywhere in the world, for the powerless. / Another Country / James Baldwin

You learn to become a policeman by attending the police academy.  Then you learn to become a policeman by riding as a rookie in a patrol car with a veteran.

And this is where the police culture steps in.  Many people would like to forget that 50 years ago the Mountain City Police ran the biggest burglary ring in the country.  And, true, those times and those men are long gone.  But I have to wonder if this attitude and these legends have not permeated the cop culture, changing it for the worse.
It is the police culture that is engrained.  The police operate under an us or them, good guys and bad guys, siege mentality.  Mountain City and Englewood police departments want to be like LA cops.   Might makes right and right makes might.
The last chief of Mountain City police played politics and kept his job for 12 years while his department ran wild.  The new chief is an import from the mid South who is here to change the police culture.  If you think this will happen, there is a cruise ship in Italy that I will sell you cheap.
The Mayor is new and is already compromised.   The Chief is so new he still has to ask where the toilet is.  The Governor, while I am sure is still quite involved in Mountain City is standing on the East steps of the Statehouse listening for the call of the Great (Kinda’) White Father.  I have personal experience on coming in from the outside and trying to change Jack.  If I were Chief White I wouldn’t unpack my bags.

This will be continued and picked up on my next post.
